Solomon Islands is an archipelgo comprised of nearly 1,000 islands stretching about 1,500 km from west to east. The ecology is tropical rainforest and the soil ranges from rich volcanic to limestone. There are more than 230 species of orchids and other tropical flowers blooming there.

At one time a British Protectorate, self-government was gained in 1976 and independence followed two years later. Solomon Islands is a constitutional monarchy. The majority of the people are ethnically Melanesian (~ 94%), with Polynesian (~ 3%) and Micronesian (~ 1%) being the two other main groups. Solomon Islands has about 70 living languages.
