loc_ugandaThe Republic of Uganda is a land-locked country in east Africa, directly north of Lake Victoria. A British Protectorate in the early 20th century, Uganda gained independence in 1962. The infamous Idi Amin seized power in 1971 and ruled with the military for 8 years. During this time, an estimated 300,000 Ugandans lost their lives, and the country's economy was destroyed. Amin was deposed after Tanzania invaded in 1978, but Uganda's military problems continued.

With lots of natural resources -- including fertile soil, regular rain, mineral deposits, and untapped oil and gas reserves -- Uganda has seen huge economic improvement in the 21st century. The country has a rich and diverse culture, however, as of 2010 there are still some human rights concerns in the northern regions.
